Classification: Quality branded wine, wine with a protected designation of origin, red, dry
Variety: Danube, Alibernet, Blue Frankincense
Taste and sensory characteristics: A powerful, viscous wine of a deep, deep red colour with a purple-red rim. The aroma of the wine is distinctly fruity with clearly discernible traces of wood and ripe tannins. The fruitiness is dominated by ripe chocolate-covered cherries, blackcurrants, blackberry jam, prunes and dates. Chocolate-vanilla notes, subtle smokiness, tobacco leaf and nuances of exotic spices complete the aroma. The palate is extremely structured, glycerol-like, full of ripe, sweet tannins and an unrelenting fire. Yet still pleasantly velvety and smooth. The long aftertaste of the wine is spicy and warming with a refined finesse on the finish.
Food recommendation: This is an ideal partner for dishes of aged, aged beef, whole roasted game with heavier natural sauces. The wine excels when paired with aged cow cheeses, goat cheeses aged in ashes, or lightly smoked cheeses. It is also a great accompaniment to the more distinctive Cuban tobacco cigars with darker wrapper leaves.

PRECIOUS GIFTS OF NATURE – THE WINES OF CHATEAU RÚBAŇ GRAND
A few exceptional yet humble winemakers feel that their job is not simply to produce alcoholic beverages. They are convinced that they are an extension of nature’s hand and their mastery, art and sensitivity only allow others to perceive what Mother Nature herself has created. Are they exaggerating? Are they exaggerating? Maybe not.
The truth is that quality wine created from healthy grapes is a living product and bears the stamp of the vintage, the region, the weather and the winemaker himself. No vintage is identical to previous ones and there are always differences. We at Chateau Rúbaň strive to produce the best wine from the fruit of the best local vineyards, using gentle technology and with humility before the will of nature. We strive to maintain a high standard of wine and never disappoint our consumers with a product of inferior quality.
However, at times we also feel that Mother Nature has deeper intentions with some wines. We do our job as honestly and happily as ever, but the grapes, the wine or the wines are influenced by something special at any given moment. We observe the emergence of a precious gift of nature and feel the possibility of creating an exclusive quality.
This is not a frequent phenomenon, rather it is a rare exception. It has only happened twice in our history so far, nor do we expect it to happen more often in the next five years. It has always been a unique coincidence, an extraordinary gift of nature.
Once, a small part of the vines of the Danube grape was infected by the noble fungus Botritis cinerea, which resulted in a must with an incredible sugar content of up to 36,5° NM. In our region, this is a very rare, even unique phenomenon that has happened only once in the last ten years. This has allowed us to create a sweet red wine with the character of a 5 to 6-pipe Tokaj selection, in a quantity of only 600 bottles. It is a very rare wine, and it is virtually impossible to predict when it will next come to fruition. Thus was born the sweet red wine Danube Grand.
The second case was the 2017 vintage. The weather and natural conditions were the best in the last 5 to 7 years for all red varieties. Everything was if from the big book. During production and maturation we already felt that there was a chance to create something extraordinary that was just hiding and we were given the opportunity to show that gift. Our oenologist Laco Ďörď and sommelier Peter Kecskés set about finding the ideal combination of red cuvée. Gradually, the composition and proportions were crystallised, the way of ageing and further refinement of the wine was revealed, until what nature made possible was created: the Chateau Rúbaň Grand red wine, almost 4 800 bottles in number.
The rarity and uniqueness of the Grand wines is also underlined by their labels. They depict the night-lit silhouette of our more than 200-year-old cure in the background with an even older plane tree and a golden seal. This type of refined labels is only used for Grand wines at Chateau Rúbaň.
